Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) at San Francisco Int'l Airport (SFO)


BART is the fast, inexpensive way to get to San Francisco and around the Bay Area. Trains travel to and from San Francisco (SF) in 1/2 hour, arriving at the SFO International Terminal every 15 minutes. If you're transferring downtown, going to East Bay cities or just need to get around the bay area, get a BART ticket, it's the easy way to go at SFO!

Traveling Around the Bay Area
Taking BART at SFO is easy. Just go to the International Terminal to take BART downtown. BART stops at four downtown SF stations that are an easy walk or short cab ride to most San Francisco hotels. The BART downtown San Francisco stations are:
  • Civic Center - exit for Upper Market, Van Ness, the Castro and Civic Center districts

  • Powell/4th Street - exit for the Marriott, Hilton, Union Sq. hotels and Moscone W.

  • MontgomeryStreet - exit for Moscone N/S, Sheraton Palace Hotel, W Hotel, the Financial District or South of Market hotels.

  • Embarcadero - exit for the Lower Financial District the Hyatt Regency and taxis to Fisherman's Wharf hotels.

The heart of San Francisco is only a 1/2 hour ride away from SFO. Powell Street Station puts you within easy access to many major hotels and San Francisco's Municipal Public Transit system (MUNI). The Montgomery Station is located in the Financial District and is a three block walk from the Moscone Convention Center. The Embarcadero Station is located near easy connections to Fisherman's Wharf and other San Francisco attractions.

BART can also take you beyond San Francisco to many East Bay cities, such as Oakland, Berkeley, Fremont and Walnut Creek. Downtown Oakland is a 45 minute ride from SFO and the Oakland City Center/12th Street Station is just a few blocks from the Oakland’s Jack London Square. Directions to BART
The BART station at SFO is located in the International Terminal. It's a short walk from United Airlines in Terminal 3 to BART and a slightly longer walk from airlines arriving at Terminal 1.

You can also take the free Airtrain from both terminals directly to the BART station. Just follow the signs to Airtrain and board the Red Line train to the BART station as shown on the diagram below. Take the escalator down to the Departures Level and walk straight ahead to the station. Terminals 1, 2 & 3 are approximately a one to three-minute AirTrain ride to the BART station.

International Terminal arriving passengers should turn right when leaving customs, walk to the escalator and go up to the Departures level. Walk straight ahead and turn left at the art exhibit and you’ll see the station entrance. See the SFO map below for more details.

Arriving in San Francisco
The BART downtown SF stations are underground and run in an East/West direction. When you exit the train and take the escalator up you’ll be one level below Market Street.

Civic Center Directions
All the Civic Ctr. Station exits lead to lower Market street hotels. Take the Market/7 th St exit for the Renoir Hotel.
Board the front train cars at SFO to be close to this exit upon arrival.

Powell Station Directions
The Powell St. station exit for Union Square hotels is Hallidae Plaza. Board the rear train cars at SFO to be close to this exit upon arrival. Take the 4 th St. exit for the Marriott and Moscone West. Board the front train cars at SFO to be close to this exit upon arrival.

Montgomery Station Directions
The Montgomery exit for Moscone, W, Westin, Sheraton Palace and south of Market (SOMA) hotels is Market/3 rd St. Take the escalator on the left side of the station to the street level. Board the rear train cars at SFO to be close to this exit upon arrival.

Embarcadero Station Directions
The Embarcadero exit for the Hyatt Embarcadero is Drumm St. Take the escalator on the left at the east end of the station up to Drumm St. You’ll be right at the Hyatt’s front door. Board the front train cars at SFO to be close to this exit upon arrival.

 Taking BART to SFO for Your Flight
When returning to the airport, take the SFO bound train from any downtown BART station. If you are going to SFO from another city it may be necessary to transfer to the SFO bound train, which originates on the Pittsburgh/Bay Point line. Check the BART System Map for transfer points.

Upon arriving at SFO take the AirTrain Red Line from BART to Terminal 1, 2 or 3 for your flight. You can also walk to Terminal 1 or 3 from BART in 5 – 10 minutes. International terminal passengers exit the train and walk to the front of the station. The international flight check-in counters are a very short walk from the BART station main entrance.

BART Tips for Visitors to San Francisco

PLANNING YOUR BART TRIP
BART has one of the highest on-time performance records in the nation, but to be prudent you should give yourself a little extra time in case you miss a transfer or an unanticipated delay occurs. Visit the BART trip planner to look up BART times and use the convenient printable schedule version to take a copy with you.

BART Weekday Service Hours
4:40 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.

BART Weekend Airport Service Hours
Sat: 6:30 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.
Sun: 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.

Please make alternative airport travel plans if this schedule conflicts with early morning weekend flights.

BART TICKETS
To purchase BART tickets/transfers from SFO to San Francisco or beyond click here. U.S. Residents Only BART ticket machines accept nickels, dimes, quarters, $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills (Please note that the ticket machine will not dispense more than $4.95 in change for any one transaction). You can also use a credit card in select machines at all stations. BART ticket machines will only allow purchases up to $50 per day on the same credit card.

BART fares are based on the distance you travel. The ticket is read when you enter and leave the stations and the correct fare deducted. If there is $.05 or more remaining on the ticket it will be returned to you. You can enter a station with a ticket valued at less then the fare, but must add fare to the ticket before exiting your destination station. Add Fare machines are located close to the exit fare gates at all stations. If the exact fare is on the ticket when exiting the ticket will not be returned.

YOUR LUGGAGE
Please keep the aisles clear by storing your luggage under your seat or holding it on your lap. Some cars have space cleared by the doors to accommodate wheelchairs, bikes or strollers. If the space is not being used by a person with a disability, you may store your luggage there, but please keep it within your control at all times.

ACCESSIBILITY
All BART stations are accessible to the disabled. Elevators and fare gates designated for the disabled may also be used by airline passengers with luggage.

TAKING BART FOR SIGHTSEEING TRIPS
Many San Francisco and Bay Area attractions are located close to a BART station. San Francisco attractions include; Museum of Modern Art, Asian Art Museum (MOMA), numerous theaters, the Ferry Building, SBC Park (SF Giants baseball), the Mission District and Moscone Center. East Bay attractions include; Oakland California Museum, Jack London Sq. Oakland, Berkeley’s Univ. of California, Berkeley Rep Theater, Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse Restaurant, Walnut Creek for shopping and dining, Oakland Coliseum/ for Oakland A’s baseball and Warriors NBA basketball.
