Street elevator at Powell Street Station closed for renovation

The street level elevator enclosure at Powell Street Station is being replaced, therefore the elevator is closed through April 2010. However, the street-level, city-operated elevator that serves Powell Street Station, via Hallidie Plaza, will remain open.

BART started a major elevator rennovation project in early 2009, and has already replaced the street-level elevator enclosures at Civic Center, Embarcadero, and Montgomery Street BART/Muni Metro stations. The work is necessary to extend the life of the equipment and improve the reliability of the elevator doors.

REPLACEMENT PROJECT DETAILS
It's necessary for BART to close the elevator in order to replace the structure that houses the elevator entrance on Market Street. While an individual station elevator is being worked on, only the street elevator at that station will be closed. Movement between the paid area to the platform level will remain in service. Escalators will remain in service and BART will increase preventative maintenance to reduce escalator breakdowns during these elevator closures.
