Hazardous Material Abatement at Powell St. Station October 2017 Update
11/22 Update: The work is completed, however the barricade will remain up through the Holiday as sign-off is needed before it can come down. We apologize for the inconvenience.
11/7 Update: The abatement work is taking longer than expected due to some challenges with the structures. The work will be completed before Thanksgiving.
Starting on October 9, 2017, at Powell Street Station, contractors will remove asbestos from three locations in the middle of the station. This work is part of our preparations for the installation of new ceiling panels and lights.
The material has not been a hazard while it remained undisturbed, however, since the installation of new ceiling panels and lights could cause dust or flaking of the material--it must now be removed.
We will take all precautions to protect our customers and employees while this work is being done. The removal work will occur when the station is closed, however the protective enclosure will remain in place when the station is open. During the work, special filtering systems will ensure the air in the station is clean.
The contractors doing the work are required to wear various safety equipment such as special suits, masks, respirators, etc. This is part of regulations and is done for the safety of the workers. BART Safety Monitors will be present during the work.
There is no reason for customers to fear for their safety- this is a common process for a common material, and should take no more than two weeks to remove.
We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience.
