A BART train heading from Embarcadero Station toward the East Bay struck an object in the Transbay Tube on Friday afternoon and was taken out of service.
A separate train was brought in to take passengers off the disabled train and return them to Embarcadero Station. There are two tracks in the tube beneath the bay, so that if there is a problem with one, service can continue with trains single-tracking around the problem area.
The incident started at about 1:05 p.m. and initially caused delays of up to 45 minutes between San Francisco and the East Bay, with scattered residual delays through the system after that.
It was not immediately known what type of object was struck by the train, but a track inspection was performed to determine that there was no damage to the trackway before service resumed.
