Embarcadero Station Elevator to Close for Several Months

Dear Customer:

On Monday, May 4, 2009, BART will close the street elevator at Embarcadero Station in order to demolish and replace the structure that houses the elevator entrance on the street level.  Unfortunately, we must shut down the elevator for approximately three and one-half months (until August 2009) during this construction.  If you rely on the elevators to enter and exit at Embarcadero Station you should exit at our Montgomery Street Station.

The Montgomery Station elevator is located on Market and Sutter, approximately 3-1/2 blocks from the location of the Embarcadero Station street elevator.  If riders are unable to proceed from Montgomery under their own power, they can take any one of the following Muni lines which stop on Market Street near both Embarcadero and Montgomery:

  • 7 Haight
  • 2 Clement
  • 21 Hayes
  • 31 Balboa

For suggestions on transit alternatives to the Civic Center area or general information on the BART/Muni Elevator Enclosure Replacement Project, find details here or go to www.sfmta.com; or call BART Transit Information at (415) 989-BART, (925) 676-BART, or (510) 465-BART.  For Muni information call (415) 701-2311; or if you’re within the 415 area code, call 311.

This elevator closure is part of a major project to reconstruct the street elevator enclosures on the elevators of the BART/Muni Metro Stations at Civic Center, Embarcadero, Montgomery, and Powell.  We are conducting this necessary replacement work to update the elevator enclosures to current standards, extend the life of the equipment and improve the reliability of the elevator doors.

We apologize for any inconvenience the temporary closure may cause.
