BART looks into cause of train uncoupling in Transbay Tube

Service through the Transbay Tube resumed this morning around 7:25 a.m., about an hour after it was halted when a nine-car train bound from Pittsburg/Bay Point to San Francisco International Airport uncoupled in the tube.

The train uncoupled at 6:23 a.m. and separated into two sections so that there was a five-car section and a four-car section, BART spokesman Jim Allison said. "Both sections of the trains immediately stopped because of a failsafe feature," he said, adding that there were no injuries.

"The five-car section of the train was moved out very quickly but the four-car train had no operator on board, obviously," Allison said.

A supervisor was brought in to take the four-car section out of the tube at about 7:10 a.m. The track was inspected and trains resumed running through the tube as normal, with some residual delays.

Both sections of the train were taken to the Daly City maintenance yard. An initial inspection revealed a fracture in the assembly unit that connected the two sections of the train; further inspections were continuing.
