Powell Street Station modernization project begins in April 2011

In the coming weeks, BART will begin station modernization work at the Powell Street BART station.

Work will include the removal and replacement of ceiling sound baffles, partial removal of walls to open up circulation, new illuminated signage, asbestos abatement and waterproofing on the concourse and platform levels. The work is expected to begin on April 1, 2011, and last for approximately 20 months until the winter of 2012.

Some work will be accomplished during service hours, but should not interfere with customer access. This work will occur either behind plywood wall enclosures or within self-contained mobile modules to ensure the safety of our workers and our customers. Work to remove and replace sound baffles over the trackway will take place during non-operating hours. Passengers may see workers entering and exiting the station area in protective clothing. This clothing is required for the asbestos abatement work. All of this work will be contained and closely monitored. There will be a BART safety monitor onsite at all times work is being done.
