Rebuilt platform escalator open at Civic Center Station

A fully rebuilt escalator now connects the platform and concourse levels at Civic Center Station in downtown San Francisco. Opened December 18th, 2023, the escalator is the latest accomplishment for an ambitious project to replace 40 escalators at downtown stations and potentially add one new escalator.

The next escalator expected to be completed is a platform unit at Montgomery Street Station with work also underway on platform escalators at Powell Street and Embarcadero Stations. In early 2024, crews will begin working to rebuild another platform escalator at Civic Center Station. 

The new escalators improve rider safety and escalator reliability by incorporating the latest technology. The new units use less energy, provide better lighting and are constructed of sustainable materials. An automatic lubrication system applies lubricant only when and where it is needed to keep the units operating smoothly.
