BART and HNTB Win ASCE's California Award For BART/SFO Extension

The American Society of Civil Engineers has awarded its prestigious 2004 Outstanding Civil Engineering Transportation Project in the State of California to the Bay Area Rapid Transit District and HNTB Corporation for the BART extension to San Francisco International Airport.

The project was an FTA-sponsored Turnkey Demonstration Design-Build Project, and BART's first ever design-build project. HNTB was both engineer of record and prime consultant on three out of the four design/build contracts developed for this extension. The construction cost of the three contracts totaled approximately $705 million. HNTB was a subcontractor to the joint venture of Tutor-Saliba/Slattery, the prime contractor responsible for constructing the BART/SFO extension.

HNTB's three contracts included the line, trackwork and systems contract, the San Bruno Station and parking structure contract and the South San Francisco Station and parking structure contract. HNTB designed over six miles of underground subway, more than one mile of at-grade trackway, and over one mile of aerial bridge structures, connecting BART to SFO. Additionally, HNTB's work included structural and civil design elements, trackwork design, systems design, grading and utilities design, ventilation structures, traction power substations and train control facilities.

The firm designed the architectural and structural finishes, underground platforms, and bus transit connections for the San Bruno and South San Francisco stations, including a five level, 1,000 space parking structure at San Bruno and a three-level, 1,200 space parking structure at South San Francisco. HNTB also designed a combined city of San Bruno and BART Joint Police Station.

The BART/SFO extension opened on June 22, 2003 and now provides the greater San Francisco Bay Area with a new connection to the global transit network, and a link to the rest of the world.

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District, or BART, was established in 1957 by the California State Legislature. Today BART serves 91 million passengers annually. BART's five lines go through four counties 26 cities and 43 stations. BART is proud to announce that in October 2004, the American Public Transportation Association named BART "The #1 Transit System in North America." This is the highest honor a transportation system can receive. BART owes this honor to the vision and commitment of Bay Area residents and the hard work of all BART employees.
