BART to hold public forum on Environmental Assessment of Earthquake Safety Program

BART is inviting the public to an open forum next week on the Environmental Assessment of BART's $1.3 billion Earthquake Safety Program. The hearing at Oakland's MetroCenter Wednesday, September 14th will give the public an opportunity to learn about the Earthquake Safety Program and to make written or oral statements about the Environmental Assessment.

COMMENTS TO BE ADDRESSED IN FINAL DOCUMENT
The comments will be addressed in a final Environmental Assessment document. The hearing is part of the 30-day public review period of the draft Environmental Assessment, which is now available for public review. The Environmental Assessment and other background studies are available at locations listed below. People who wish to comment on the Environmental Assessment are not required to attend Wednesday's public hearing; other methods of comment are listed below. The public review period ends at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2005.

EARTHQUAKE SAFETY BACKGROUND
The Earthquake Safety Program will upgrade the BART system from the Berkeley Hills Tunnel in Oakland to Montgomery Street Station in San Francisco, including the Transbay Tube, to ensure that it can return to operation shortly after a major earthquake. BART is engaged in an environmental review process with the cooperation of Caltrans and the Federal Highway Safety Administration.
