BART service restored after Transbay Tube, Glen Park closures

BART operated past its normal closing time after midnight on Sunday, Aug. 31, and into the early-morning hours of Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 1, to get passengers to their final destinations after a man walked from Embarcadero Station into the Transbay Tube around 12:15 a.m., forcing a closure of the tube. Police took the man into custody and conducted a sweep of the tube, and service was restored at 1:04 a.m.

"We're going to make sure that all the passesngers get to their final destinations before we shut down service for the night," said BART Chief Spokesperson Linton Johnson.

The Transbay Tube closure came about three hours after BART's Glen Park Station was shut down due to a suspicious package found on a train. Bus bridges were set up to shuttle passengers to their stations during the Glen Park closure. A bomb squad investigated the package and determined the station could be reopened shortly after midnight.

In observance of the Labor Day holiday, on Monday, Sept. 1, BART will operate on a Sunday schedule. Service will begin at 8 a.m. and run until midnight.  While service starts two hours later on Labor Day, BART officials reminded the public that BART’s 2008 schedule offers 33% more service, so there will be the same frequency of trains customers enjoy on a non-holiday. As an added bonus, on Labor Day there will be plenty of free parking at BART.  Parking fees are not enforced on designated BART holidays.

BART’s Administration Office will be closed in observance of the federal holiday.

Train schedules are available at all BART stations. Travel information is also available by calling 510-465-BART (510-465-2278) or online at http://www.bart.gov/.
