Earthquake safety work underway at West Oakland Station
As part of BART's system-wide Earthquake Safety Program, we will begin strengthening structures at the West Oakland Station to withstand future earthquakes. During the project, you can expect construction-related noise and some dust. We will post signs with safety information and to alert you of work in progress.
Construction Work Details:
Description: Constructing temporary enclosures, adding steel and concrete to foundations, wrapping columns with steel reinforcement, and protecting utilities and equipment
Location: 22 columns throughout the station and parking lots, stairs, escalators, platform canopies and other locations
Start Date: March 2009
Duration: Approximately two years
Hours: Most work in the daytime on weekdays, some work at night or on weekends. Emergency work as necessary.
A separate project to strengthen columns over nearby streets will occur in the future. Earthquake Safety Program construction will be underway at various locations throughout the BART system over the next five years, and is expected to be complete by the end of 2013. Check out the BARTtv news story about our Earthquake Safety Program construction projects at www.bart.gov/news/barttv.
As always, safety is BART’s top priority. Our aim is to strengthen BART as quickly as possible, while maintaining BART service.
