BART Police offer tips to prevent car thefts and burglaries

BART wants your time on our transit system to be a pleasant, crime-free experience, so the BART Police Department is sharing the following tips to keep your vehicle secure while you travel.

USE THE COMMON SENSE APPROACH

  • Park in a well-lit area
  • Lock your doors / close your windows
  • Remove your keys from the ignition
  • Do not leave anything, especially valuables, in plain view

USE WARNING DEVICES: ALERT THIEVES THAT YOUR VEHICLE IS PROTECTED

  • Install audible alarms
  • Install steering column collars
  • Install wheel locks

CONSIDER IMMOBILIZING DEVICES TO PREVENT “HOT WIRING” OR BYPASSING YOUR IGNITION

  • Use smart keys
  • Install kill switches
  • Utilize starter, ignition, and fuel pump disablers

HOW TO REPORT CRIMES AND SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

Together, we can work to make BART safer. Your help as extra eyes and ears can reduce crime on BART. Report any suspicious behavior or activities by telling a Station Agent, calling BART Police or using the intercom that is in every train car to contact the Train Operator. For emergencies, call 911 and for non-emergencies program the BART Police dispatch line into your phone: 510-464-7000. Remember, if you “SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING!”

If you need language assistance services, please call BART’s Transit Information Center at (510) 465-2278.
