Project Elements

BART constructed the Powell St. Station Modernization project to reduce crowding, improve accessibility, deter fare evasion, and enhance customers’ experience. 

Key improvements included: 

  • Renovation and re-opening of public restrooms on the concourse level (see news article from January 31, 2022)  
  • “Elysium”, an illuminated ceiling artwork by San Francisco artist Stephen Galloway (see news article from November 23, 2022
  • Replacement of existing lighting with energy-efficient LED fixtures throughout station 
  • Taller glass fare barriers 
  • New metallic grid ceiling to better contain mechanical elements 
  • Relocated Clipper vending machines and staff break room for better sightlines, circulation and wayfinding 

Funding and partnerships

Funded by voter approved BART Measure RR, State of California Proposition 1B, San Francisco County Proposition K, and through partnership with San Francisco’s Municipal Transportation Agency.

Station Modernization Plan

The Powell St. Station Modernization Program – Final Report was completed in 2015 and is a long-term vision for improvements to enhance accessibility, safety and security, capacity, state of good repair, appearance, and sustainability.
