BART’s made big changes.

We put the concerns of our riders first and enacted the Safe and Clean Plan. Here’s what we've accomplished so far.

Welcome onboard the New BART.

Safety and security

  • Ensuring BART Police are riding trains more, increasing their visibility, and keeping riders safe by doubling officer presence systemwide.
  • Progressive policing approach uses unarmed Crisis Intervention Specialists, Ambassadors and Fare Inspectors for additional patrols with experts in de-escalation.
  • Recruiting for all vacant officer positions and adding additional officer positions once vacancies filled.
  • Maintaining 4,000+ surveillance cameras to minimize response time and hold suspects accountable.
  • LED lighting installed on platforms and in parking facilities to eliminate dark corners.
  • Conducting welfare checks for the unhoused and enforcing no drug use or smoking.

New fare gates make riders feel safer

  • Taller, stronger fare gates to reduce fare evasion and anti-social behavior at all stations.
  • Completed installation of 700+ new fare gates systemwide in August 2025, four months ahead of end of 2025 deadline.
  • Fare gates added to enclose elevators to further reduce fare evasion.

Clean trains and stations

  • Doubled the rate of deep cleaning on train cars.
  • Running only new Fleet of the Future train cars.
  • Added nearly 66% more dedicated crews working to keep stations clean.
  • Staffed restrooms at high-volume stations with attendants to guarantee cleanliness and safety.

BART’s General Manager Bob Powers welcomes you onboard

“2025 was a transformative year for BART as we delivered on our commitment to make the system safer, cleaner, and easier to use. The New BART is a promise to our riders that they always come first. In 2026, we will work hard to sustain these gains while positioning the system for future success. We know the Bay Area is counting on us."
