Service restored at Lake Merritt; system recovering, some residual delays

Service has been restored in both directions bewteen Lake Merritt and Fruitvale stations and the system is recovering after earlier major delays due to a smoking cable.

The incident started around 7:50 a.m. on Friday when the smoking cable was reported between Lake Merritt and Fruitvale stations. While crews worked to repair the cable, BART had to do single-tracking through the area, causing major delays. However, shortly after 11 a.m., service in both directions was restored. The system was recovering, although customers were advised to expect some residual delays on the lines through Lake Merritt.

Service on two other lines -- from Pittsburg/Bay Point to San Francisco International Airport and from Richmond to Millbrae -- was operating close to normal with only minimal, if any delays.
