BART to Build New Station Entrance Canopy at 19th Street Station

The BART Board of Directors voted today to move forward with a pilot project to install a canopy enclosure over the street level escalator entrance to 19th Street Station in downtown Oakland. Installing a canopy will not only protect the escalator, but will improve passenger and employee safety. The canopy provides better lighting at the entrance, the addition of security cameras and a way to close off the escalator stairwell when a station is closed. If successful, the canopy project could be extended to other BART stations with street level escalators.
