5:20 pm update: BART Police Chief Ed Alvarez held a news conference at El Cerrito del Norte Station where he confirmed officers recovered a handgun in connection with the officer-involved shooting that happened earlier that same afternoon.  Alvarez says the incident began as a domestic dispute aboard a train at around 2 pm.  Another rider on the train called BPD and told them there was a couple arguing and the male appeared to have a handgun.  Officers arrived a minute and a half after the call and confronted the suspect.  BPD says the suspect fled the train and went into the trackway where he produced the gun.  Chief Alvarez says that’s when the suspect was shot by police.  The suspect suffered life-threatening injuries but nobody else was injured.  BPD is in the process of conducting its investigation with oversight form the Office of the Independent Police Auditor, which had staff at the scene.  Investigators are interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence, and collecting surveillance video from the train, station, and officers’ body cameras.

4:25 pm update:  No train service at Richmond Station due to on-going investigation needing access to the trackway.  El Cerrito del Norte and Richmond stations both closed until further notice.  No estimate yet for restoration of normal service.

3:25 pm update: Some train service being restored at Richmond Station.  All Fremont-bound trains now able to leave Richmond and run through El Cerrito del Norte Station via single tracking.  El Cerrito del Norte remains closed with no estimate for its reopening.

At around 2 pm this afternoon there was an officer-involved shooting at the El Cerrito del Norte Station.  The investigation is in its very early stages and is requiring the temporary closure of the station.  Investigators confirm a person was shot by a BART police officer and a gun was recovered at the scene. A member of the Office of the Independent Police Auditor is at the scene of the shooting, per the oversight model for the BART Police Department.

There is currently no train service to either the Richmond or El Cerrito del Norte stations.  Riders wanting to catch a Millbrae-bound train are advised to go to the North Berkeley station.  Riders wanting to catch a Warm Springs-bound train should go to the El Cerrito Plaza station.  AC Transit is offering parallel bus service in the north bound direction on line 52 and then a transfer to line 72 or 72 M.
