Water Intrusion Repairs and Hazardous Material Mitigation at Powell Street Station Starts Monday 2/1/2021

Starting on February 1, at Powell Street Station, barricades will be installed near the entrance to Westfield Center by the Starbucks store. The Starbucks and Mall entrance will remain open.

Initially, contractors will remove and/or safely contain asbestos from the ceiling in this area. This work is part of our preparations for the repair of the water that has been leaking into the ceiling. The abatement work should take approximately one week.

The material has not been a hazard while it was undisturbed, however, since the work in the area could cause dust or flaking of the material--it must now be removed or contained safely.

We will take all precautions to protect our customers and employees while this work is being done. Protective drapes and scaffolding will surround the work area. During the work, special filtering systems will ensure the air in the station is clean.

The contractors doing the work are required to wear various safety equipment such as special suits, masks, respirators, etc. This is part of regulations and is done for the safety of the workers. BART Safety Monitors will be present during the work.

Once the area has been made safe, BART employees will perform the leak repair work. This should also take approximately one week. Once the repairs are completed the barricades will be removed.

We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience.
