Temporary escalator closures start 4/26/21 at Montgomery and Powell Street stations to make way for installation of replacements

BART is moving forward with its Market Street Escalators Renovation Project by beginning prep work this month for the next set of new escalators to be installed at the Montgomery Street and Powell Street stations. Three escalators will be replaced in this next round of work including the plaza level unit at One Post Plaza at Montgomery, a platform-level escalator at Montgomery, and a platform-level escalator at Powell.

On 4/19 work will begin at Montgomery Station on two long-term barricades that will be used to store equipment and materials for the work. On 4/26 work will begin for the temporary closure of the platform escalator on the west side of Montgomery Station.  In early May construction barricades will go up that will require the temporary closure of the One Post Plaza street-level escalator to the public until October. BART will reopen the south side entrance at the corner of Market & New Montgomery in front of the Sheraton Palace for ease of access while the north side escalator at One Post Plaza is closed during construction. Also, the east side platform escalator at Powell Street Station will be temporarily closed starting in early May for the start of replacement work.

Thank you for your patience as we work to accomplish these important projects along the Market Street corridor. For more information on the multi-year escalator and canopy projects, go to the Project page: www.bart.gov/about/planning/sfentrances
