BART beefs up Saturday service beginning 6/12/21

On July 1, 2021 we announced will return to near-pre pandemic service on August 2 instead of August 30 as originally planned.

Tomorrow marks a new chapter in the Bay Area’s pandemic recovery with more frequent BART service on Saturdays to better serve riders heading out for weekend activities. Sixteen additional train trips will serve Saturday riders throughout the day, with most of the trips serving the heavily used Pleasant Hill – Daly City corridor. One additional trip has been added from SFO in the morning, and one headed to SFO has been added in the afternoon.

Saturday ridership has recovered at a faster rate than weekday ridership. Last Saturday, 42,356 riders took BART – 27% of pre-pandemic ridership for a June Saturday.

“We’re excited to see our riders returning and we’re adding trains to make it more convenient,” said BART Board President Mark Foley. “Sitting in a traffic jam on a Saturday afternoon is no fun. BART, on the other hand, is on-time well above 90% of the time and, with more frequent service beginning tomorrow, we feel we’re the best way to get around on a sunny Saturday.”

Riders can plan their trips with the updated BART Trip Planner  and new PDF timetables have been posted in our schedule section. The most frequent Saturday service will be during the late morning and late afternoon windows between Pleasant Hill and Daly City, just about the time when many Saturday riders are heading back-and-forth from the East Bay and the City.

Also tomorrow, BART will reopen all station entrances that were closed in October 2020 due to low ridership. Some construction-related closures will remain.

BART currently closes around 9pm with most trains leaving the end-of-the-line stations at 9pm. We continue to provide resources for trip planning after 9pm including late night transbay bus service provided by AC Transit.

The Saturday service increase follows added weekday service that began this Monday. Both enhancements hint at future service improvements to come later this summer.

Starting August 2, 2021, BART will expand service hours and significantly increase service:

  • Weekday service will be 5am-12am (currently 5am-9pm) with 15-min frequencies on all lines from 5am-8pm and 30-minute frequencies from 8pm-midnight.
  • Saturday service will be 6am-12am (currently 8am-9pm) with 5-line service offering more options for Saturday riders, and for the first time, offering four trains per hour one most lines.
  • Sunday service will remain 8am-9pm with 3-line service and 30-minute frequencies to accommodate BART’s critical cable replacement project and other infrastructure rebuilding work.

BART will offer a special promotion of 50% off all fares on Clipper for the entire month of September. The discount will apply to all fares on Clipper, including already discounted Clipper cards such as Youth, Senior, RTC, Clipper Start, and the Gator Pass.
