Red line service (Richmond to Millbrae) fully restored at 4pm on 6/22

4:15pm Update on June 22, 2022

At 4pm on June 22, 2022 BART restored the Red line offering direct service between Richmond and SF/Millbrae. This also means regular service has been restored to Millbrae.

Crews have been working to find a solution to a cable fault that occurred Friday night on June 17. Though we have restored full service we still have work to do on this line.

The traction power cable on the Richmond line is some of the oldest in the system. While BART has begun to fully replace the aged cable, it will take more than a year to complete the 6 remaining miles.

On Friday, June 17th, BART experienced a power traction cable fault (or break) near the Richmond station impacting Richmond line service. The Red line (Richmond-Millbrae+SFO) was cancelled over the weekend and only Orange line (Richmond to Berryessa) trains were running.

Starting Monday June 20, riders coming to and from the Richmond direction will have train service every 15 minutes in both directions until 8pm when trains run every 30 minutes. Only the Orange line (Richmond to Berryessa) will run. Announcements will be made on platforms and inside trains.

Transbay riders without direct service can expect a timed transfer between an Orange Line (Berryessa) train and a Yellow Line (SF/SFO) train going into San Francisco at MacArthur Station and a timed transfer between an Yellow Line (Antioch) train and a Orange Line (Richmond) train coming from San Francisco at 19th St. Oakland Station.

A shuttle train will be provided between Millbrae and SFO to connect to Yellow line (Antioch-SFO) service.

Crews are working to determine the exact location of the cable fault and then will begin replacing the damaged cable to allow for full Red and Orange line service to begin. While this issue is similar to what happened in March 2022, it is in a different location on the Richmond line. BART has been working to replace all aged cable along the 10-mile Richmond line and unfortunately these problems have happened before full replacement was achieved.
