New state budget supports Downtown Berkeley Station Modernization Project

The new FY ’22-’23 state budget includes critical funding to support BART’s Downtown Berkeley Station Elevator Modernization Project. BART wants to thank State Senator Nancy Skinner for supporting BART’s funding request and securing the $5 million in the state budget.

These funds will allow BART to improve the functionality and availability of the two elevators in the Downtown Berkeley Station that serve the street, concourse, and platform levels. Modernizing the elevators will significantly reduce the frequency, length, and cost of repairs and will ensure the station remains accessible to the tens of thousands of riders who utilize it daily. This $5 million budget appropriation completes the project funding plan and will allow BART to move forward with design, procurement, and construction. The total cost of the project is $12 million with $7 million coming from federal funds.
