Mask mandate and labor agreements part of BART Board night meeting on 7/28

The BART Board of Directors on Thursday, July 28 will hold its third night meeting of the year. The Board this year is prioritizing holding several evening meetings to encourage greater public participation with virtual public comment as an ongoing option. 

The public portion of the July 28 meeting will begin at 5pm, however the meeting officially starts at 4pm with a closed session. The meeting will be live streamed on BART.gov. The BART Board has been meeting virtually throughout the pandemic. Public comment will be available via Zoom and phone during the meeting, or email in advance.

Planned agenda items include:

*Mask Mandate: The Board will vote to require face masks (fully covering nose and mouth) while inside the paid area of BART until October 1, 2022, unless further extended by Board resolution.

*Ratification of Collective Bargaining Agreements: The Board will be asked to ratify extensions of labor agreements which include operational efficiency gains and wage increases to address cost of living in the Bay Area, recruitment, and retention.

*Progressive Policing: BART PD Chief Ed Alvarez will deliver an update on recent progress in deploying unarmed Transit Ambassadors and Crisis Intervention Specialists. There will also be an update on the ongoing focused fare inspections at Embarcadero Station.

*Sustainability Efforts: The Board will review our annual sustainability report highlighting our action plan, performance metrics, and priorities and opportunities in the coming years.

*Transit Oriented Development: zoning for certain BART owned property is changing per state law (AB 2923) this summer. The Board will be reviewing which properties will be affected by the law, for final action at the next meeting

Those wanting to comment on open session agenda items, should join the meeting starting at 5pm. Public comment is held at the beginning and end of the board meeting and the public has an opportunity to speak on each agenda item at the time it is presented.
