Chief Ed Alvarez's statement on shooting at Fruitvale Station

5:30pm, August 26, 2022

At approximately 1:25 pm today on board a San Francisco-bound train at Fruitvale Station, one individual opened fire with a hand gun and wounded a male. The suspect immediately offboarded the train, ran out of Fruitvale Station and is still at large.

The victim continued on the train to Lake Merritt Station, where BART Police Officers rendered first aid to the victim. The first officer on the scene, a sergeant, applied a tourniquet to his arm and pressure to a wound on his leg. Other officers called for paramedics.

The victim is at Highland Medical Center and at last report was said to be in stable condition although he was transported with what were life-threatening injuries

We have recovered video from cameras aboard the train car where the shooting took place.

We have reason to believe that this was a targeted attack, not a random attack.

We are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the suspect.
