Pistol-whipping suspect identified by BART cameras and arrested for attempted homicide

The suspect in last week’s pistol-whipping aboard a BART train is under arrest for attempted homicide thanks to BART surveillance cameras and teamwork between BART Police Department and San Francisco Police Department officers.

A BPD patrol officer reviewing surveillance camera images of the March 16th incident, in which a victim suffered a graze wound when the handgun discharged during the pistol-whipping, was able to identify the suspect as Adonte Bailey.

BART detectives wrote and distributed a warrant for Bailey’s arrest. Last night, March 22, 2023, SFPD officers arrested Bailey on grand theft charges. A check of outstanding warrants revealed Bailey was wanted in the BART incident.

Police say Bailey was in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest. Investigators will test the weapon to see if it matches a bullet recovered after the March 16th incident.

“This is one more example in which the combination of our network of high-quality surveillance cameras and our dedicated officers leads to an arrest,” said BART Police Chief Ed Alvarez. “We want to thank the San Francisco Police Department for their tremendous partnership in this case.”

BART has a network of more than 4,000 cameras throughout trains, stations and other facilities that is monitored in both the BPD’s Integrated Security Response Center and BART’s Operations Control Center. This week BART increased foot patrols on trains and in stations by adding eight to 18 additional officers each shift to complement BPD’s team of unarmed, uniformed Crisis Intervention Specialists, Ambassadors, Fare Inspection Officers and Community Service Officers.

BART Police investigating discharge of handgun aboard train (originally posted on March 17, 2023)

At 9:55 pm on March 16, 2023, two men got into a verbal argument onboard an SFO-bound train approaching the Embarcadero Station. During the argument, one individual produced a handgun and, while pistol-whipping the other male, the gun discharged and the bullet grazed the victim’s head.  Officers arrived at the station as the train approached, but were unable to locate a victim or suspect. Surveillance video was immediately pulled to determine what took place.

At 10:45pm,  San Francisco Police Department officers reported they believed they had located the victim near the 16th Street Station. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

As of this writing, the suspect has not yet been located. The incident is actively under investigation.
