1,200 people said yes to BART Prom in style
The taffeta has been hung up, the dancing shoes retired, and the prom court crowned. Rockridge Station has returned to its regularly scheduled programming, but we have a feeling nobody who was there Saturday night is quite over it yet. We know we aren’t!
On Saturday, June 6, more than 1,200 people of all ages descended on Rockridge Station for BART Prom: Enchantment Under the C Line, our first-ever prom night, and it was every bit as magical as we hoped.
The Rockridge Station parking lot transformed into a glittering dance hall draped in under-the-sea splendor and 80s nostalgia. Guests arrived in sequined gowns, bow ties, lobster costumes, mullets, fare gate interpretations, and every interpretation of 80s-meets-under-the-sea-meets-transit. DJ Billy Vidal kept the dancefloor bumping before 80s cover band Sixteen Scandals took the stage and kept the crowd moving until the very last song (and encore). All the while, BART trains lit up the sky like shooting stars as promgoers cheered them on from the illuminated dancefloor.
At 8pm, the crowd gathered for the moment everyone had been waiting for: the crowning of the BART Prom King and Queen: Porfirio and Wendy. After a spirited public vote on Instagram, Wendy and Porfirio were crowned king and queen in full ceremony, BART-themed crowns, light-up scepters, and all.
There were photo booths and strangers dancing together and families who had never been to a prom sharing a first one. There were kids who will probably talk about this night for weeks, and adults who finally got the do-over they deserved.
This is what BART is all about, not just getting you where you're going, but being part of the moments that make the Bay Area worth living in. Thank you to everyone who came out, dressed up, and made Enchantment Under the C Line a night we won't forget.
See you next year.
