BART Bicycle Preferred Path of Travel Capital Plan
Many of the now fifty-year-old BART system’s stations do not offer passengers arriving by bicycle continuous, legible paths of travel from the edge of BART property to the station platforms and/or existing secure bicycle parking, which can lead to unnecessary confusion and delay, conflicts between modes, and unsafe behavior.
With the aim of addressing these longstanding bike access issues, the BART Bicycle Preferred Path of Travel Capital Plan Phase 1 (“PPoT Phase 1”) engaged BART passengers, advisory committees, local jurisdictions, and bicycle advocacy organizations around the region to develop a collection of station-specific conceptual plans for bicycle access and safety improvements on BART property at 10 high priority stations to provide passengers arriving by bicycle an easily identifiable, convenient and safe path of travel between BART station area points of entry and both station platforms and bicycle parking.
The resulting PPoT conceptual plans are intended to be ready “off the shelf” either individually or in groups to apply for grant funding opportunities, for easy integration into the future detailed design and construction efforts of larger station modernization and access improvement projects, or, in some cases, smaller PPoT conceptual designs may be finalized by BART staff for implementation directly by BART maintenance forces.
Set to kick off in 2025, Phase 2 of the BART Bicycle Preferred Path of Travel Capital Plan (“PPoT Phase 2) will expand on PPoT Phase 1 and add eight new priority stations.
The PPoT capital planning effort complements, builds on and draws from the 2020 BART Walk and Bicycle Network Gap Study, which identifies conceptual bicycle and pedestrian access improvements to the surrounding community at key BART stations; the 2012 BART Bicycle Plan; 2016 BART Station Access Policy; 2017 BART Bicycle Program Capital Plan; and the 2017 BART Multimodal Access Design Guidelines.
