Expect delays and track closures between Orinda & Walnut Creek and Hwy 24 lane closures through October

The next time the Lafayette track rebuilding project is expected to impact BART's service schedule is Saturday, October 19.  On that day, BART will single track trains between the Orinda and Walnut Creek stations.  BART riders should expect delays of up to 30 minutes between Orinda and Walnut Creek on October 19 since service will operate on only one track.  The two left eastbound lanes of Highway 24 at Oak Hill Road in Lafayette will be closed during overnight hours on the weekend of October 19.  Those closures will be from 11 pm Friday, October 18 – 7 am Saturday, October 19 and from 11 pm Saturday, October 19 – 9 am Sunday, October 20.

We are making extensive repairs and upgrades to the track between Orinda and Walnut Creek stations on most weekends through October, including some upcoming full weekend closures with bus bridges.   Using Measure RR funds, we’ll be replacing track and electrical equipment, installing new switches, improving station platforms, and making other repairs and improvements to provide more reliable, safer, quieter, smoother and faster service.

Updated list of track closure weekends: 9/28-29 and 10/26-27
Riders should expect delays of 40 minutes or more on closure weekends.

County Connection and AC Transit will provide free shuttle bus services:
1.    Direct service between Orinda and Walnut Creek

2.   Service between Orinda, Lafayette, and Walnut Creek stations.

During track closure weekends (not single tracking weeekends), the first Millbrae-bound train from Lafayette on Saturday and Sunday mornings will be cancelled.  However, this will only impact Lafayette, Orinda, and Rockridge riders because an additional Richmond-SFO train has been added and is scheduled to arrive at MacArthur Station at 6:11 am on Saturday.  The additional Richmond-SFO train will arrive at MacArthur at 8:09 am on Sunday.

Additionally, the last two train trips from Antioch to Walnut Creek on shutdown weekends have been cancelled.  The last trip of the night departs Antioch for Walnut Creek at 11:15 pm.  The regular last two trains of the night will run from Orinda toward SFO as scheduled.

Highway 24 lane closures
All lane closures for this project will happen near the Lafayette Station and Oak Hill Road and will only impact the two far-left eastbound lanes of Highway 24.  Westbound lanes will not be closed during this work.  Expect delays of up to 30 minutes during weekend daytime lane closures.  If delays reach 30 minutes Caltrans will notify BART and the number of lanes closed will be reduced from two to one.

Lane closures for single-tracking Saturdays will only happen during overnight hours from 11 pm Friday to 7 am Saturday and 11pm Saturday to 9 am Sunday.

Single-tracking weekends
Single-tracking on some Saturdays will mean delays of up to 30 minutes. Please plan your trip with that in mind. Updated list of single track dates: 10/19.

We may need to turn back some trains at Orinda to maintain our schedule. If so, you will be asked to leave the train you are on and board a different train to reach your destination.

Night work
We will also do work at night after service closes on weeknights through at least the end of October.

Sunday single tracking in San Francisco

On select Sundays through the rest of this year, there will be single-track service between the Embarcadero and 24th Street Mission stations in downtown San Francisco due to electrical cabling replacement work.  This replacement project is critical to ensure our trains can count on a reliable power supply. The work can add 15-30 minutes to your trip. Get the latest on this project here.
Use the Trip Planner, call the BART Transit Information Center at (510) 465-BART (2278), or get the Official BART app to plan your trip.
