Suspect arrested following fatal shooting at Civic Center Station

On Thursday, February 10, 2022, at around 8:30pm there was a fatal shooting at Civic Center Station, and it was BART’s increased police presence not just at Civic Center, but officers assigned to ride trains, that led to the immediate arrest of the suspect and immediate retrieval of evidence and video surveillance.

The shooting and arrest occurred at the Civic Center platform. The yet-to-be-identified male victim was alone and on the escalator heading down to the platform. The male suspect came running behind him on the escalator and, once at the platform, shot the victim with a handgun.

There were officers at the station at the time of the shooting. BART Police has full time presence during all operating hours at Civic Center Station, what we call a fixed post. Immediately following the shooting, two officers assigned to ride trains and walk platforms stepped off the train at Civic Center Station. They immediately took the suspect, Shane Holman (02/06/1998, San Francisco), into custody while other officers were rendering CPR to the victim. Six BPD officers responded within one minute of the incident.

Medical personnel arrived and transported the victim to the hospital where he was later declared deceased.

Following the shooting, the station was closed. Transbay service continued but trains were turning back at Powell St. and 16th Street Mission stations as trains were not allowed to run through the station until the end of the night. The station was reopened for riders to catch the last trains of the evening directly from Civic Center. Muni provided mutual aid for riders to get around the closure of the station.
