Rebuilt escalator opens at Montgomery St. Station

Add Montgomery Street to the list of BART stations with rebuilt escalators open to the public. An escalator that connects the concourse level to One Post Plaza near Post and Market streets was opened March 18, 2022 at Montgomery St. The new escalator is more reliable, features bright LED lighting and is more energy efficient, with a “sleep mode” that saves electricity when no passengers are using it.

The next escalator expected to be returned to service is also at Montgomery St., a unit that connects the concourse to the platform level.

Meantime, work has begun on a platform escalator at Embarcadero Station.

It’s all part of BART’s ambitious project to rebuild 40 escalators and add one new unit at four downtown San Francisco stations.

BART is replacing the most troublesome escalators in its system in the downtown San Francisco stations in conjunction with a project to create canopies over the entrances, dramatically improving the traveler experience along the Market Street corridor.
