Clipper promotion offers free cards on your phone

All riders need Clipper to pay for BART fare. We are encouraging riders to put a Clipper card on their mobile phones instead of obtaining plastic Clipper cards because global supply chain issues have depleted the inventory of plastic cards.

For limited time only, Clipper customers can set up a new Clipper card on their phones for free (normally $3). This free Clipper card promotion does not include new plastic cards and will be automatically applied for all new cards that are added to mobile devices (iOS or Android). We encourage riders to set up Clipper in their digital wallet before arriving at BART. Every rider needs their own digital card. on Apple devices, multiple digital cards can be added to one phone's wallet for families riding together.

With Clipper on your phone, you can:

  • Instantly load cash value onto your Clipper card in Apple Pay or Google Pay; the money is immediately available for use and you don’t need to use a BART vending machine
  • Simply tag your phone at our fare gates using the Clipper readers just as you would a plastic card

For step-by-step instructions on how to add a new Clipper card to your phone, please go to Clipper's  Apple Pay page or Google Pay page for more information.
The $3 fee for new plastic Clipper cards is a Clipper fee- the money does not go to BART.

Clipper is a product of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and can be used on all bay area transit systems.
