Entrance closure alert: Montgomery St. Station entrance at Market and Montgomery closed 4/17/23 for work on new canopy

On Monday, April 17th, 2023, our contractor will build a work enclosure around the Market Street and Montgomery Street entrance to Montgomery St. Station. The entrance on the north side of the station will be closed off to public access for approximately six months while a new protective escalator canopy is built (see map). The canopy will include a digital display to show train arrival times, a new security grille, LED lighting, security cameras, and other improvements. The canopy will mean that our escalator at this entrance will be protected from the elements to help limit breakdowns. We expect work on this canopy to be complete by Fall 2023.

While this entrance is closed, patrons will still be able to access the underground corridor that exits to the sidewalk at 44 Montgomery during business hours.  Patrons will also be able to use one of the other entrances to the station. Entrances open during construction include Market and New Montgomery, and Market and Sutter.

Over the next 4-5 years BART will construct 16 canopies on Market Street over downtown station entrances.  As part of a separate project, new escalators will be installed at each of these locations following the canopy construction.  In addition to protecting new escalators the canopies will improve safety and reduce station maintenance costs.

We thank you for your patience as we work to complete this important construction project.  For more information on this project visit: bart.gov/about/planning/sfentrances
