Entrance closure alert: Powell St. Station entrance at Market and 4th St. closed 4/24/23 for work on new canopy

On Monday, April 24th, 2023, our contractor will build a work enclosure around the Market Street and 4th Street entrance to Powell St. Station near the Station Agent booth. This entrance on the south side of the station will be closed off to public access for approximately six months while a new protective escalator canopy is built. The canopy will include a digital display to show train arrival times, a new security grille, LED lighting, security cameras, and other improvements. The canopy will mean that our escalator at this entrance will be protected from the elements to help limit breakdowns. We expect work on this canopy to be complete by Fall 2023.

While this entrance is closed, patrons will still be able to use one of the other entrances to the station. Entrances open during construction include Market and 4th St. on the north side of the station, Market and Ellis St., and Market and 5th Street.

Over the next 4-5 years BART will construct 16 canopies on Market Street over downtown station entrances.  As part of a separate project, new escalators will be installed at each of these locations following the canopy construction.  In addition to protecting new escalators the canopies will improve safety and reduce station maintenance costs.

We thank you for your patience as we work to complete this important construction project.  For more information on this project visit: bart.gov/about/planning/sfentrances
