North Berkeley Station: access impacts from work on Delaware St. raised sidewalk

Beginning July 14, 2025, as part of the North Berkeley Access Improvements Project, a raised midblock crosswalk will be constructed to replace the existing street-level crosswalk on Delaware Street between Acton and Sacramento near Short Street. Construction impacts will include the following:

  • Work is expected to be performed in two phases. During Phase 1, northbound vehicular access from West Access Road / Delaware Street is expected to be temporarily closed for 3 weeks. During the closure, drivers seeking to park in the west lot will be detoured to the parking lot entrance on Acton Street at Francisco Street, and cyclists seeking to access the station and bike parking on the plaza will be detoured to enter from further east on Delaware via the two-way cycle track along East Access Road, the main station entry road. Meanwhile, all drivers exiting the west parking lots will exit west onto Acton Street or North onto Virginia Street.
  • During Phase 2, northbound vehicular access from West Access Road/ Delaware Street will reopen for use. However, the section of sidewalk on the south side of Delaware Street between Sacramento and Acton Street is expected to remain closed for the duration of phase 2 for about 3 weeks.
  • Throughout the construction of both phases, Delaware Street is expected to remain a through street; both eastbound and westbound Delaware Street will remain open with temporary reductions to lane widths and speed limits.
  • Some street parking on Delaware Street will be temporarily unavailable to accommodate traffic controls for construction.

Most work will be carried out between 6am and 3pm with occasional weekend work between 9am to 3pm.

The project includes bicycle and pedestrian access improvements in the satellite parking lots to the northwest of the station as well as the main station area.
