Accessible Fare Gate Replacement at Civic Center Station

April 1, 2024  Update

On April 1st, crews finished installation and put into service the next generation fare gate at the elevator entrance of the Civic Center platform.

Posted March 22, 2024:

BART will replace the existing accessible fare gate near the elevator on the platform level of Civic Center Station with a new Next Generation Fare Gate. The work is set to begin March 22, 2024 and is expected to be completed by April 5, 2024. During the work, the elevator will remain open and there will be an accessible path for riders, but it will require temporary new tap in/tap out procedures (see below).

Later this summer, BART will replace all the fare gates on the concourse level of Civic Center Station.

Our “Must Tap” Policy During Construction

During construction, riders will not be able to tap their Clipper card at the faregate in front of the elevator on the platform. All riders using the elevator will need to tap in and out of the station at the concourse level.

To leave Civic Center Station:

  1. riders will exit the train at the platform level;
  2. take the elevator up to the concourse level;
  3. go to the Station Agent booth nearest the elevator;
  4. ask the Station Agent to enter the paid area;
  5. have the Station Agent tap the rider's Clipper card at the accessible fare gate to exit.

  2. enter through the concourse-level accessible fare gate and take the elevator down to the platform.

During construction BART will provide an accessible pathway for riders through the construction area. Signs will be prominently displayed to help guide riders.

Bus Bridge Alert: free buses replace trains between Walnut Creek and Concord June 21-22

Calendar with highlighted dates for the bus bridge on June 21-22.

BART must replace decades old track components between Walnut Creek and Concord stations to ensure reliable service. To allow for the work to happen in the most efficient way possible as well as to provide safe conditions for workers, there will be no train service between Walnut Creek and Concord on Saturday June 21 and Sunday June 22. Instead, riders will get off their train and take a free bus to move between Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre, and Concord stations. Riders can expect delays of 20 to 30 minutes in the work area.

The project will also require the cancellation of some late night and early morning trains.

Saturday Morning:

  • The first southbound trains departing Concord at 5:35am and 5:55am will be cancelled.
  • Instead, the first southbound trains going to San Francisco will depart Walnut Creek at 5:43am, 6:03am, and 6:23am.
  • To accommodate southbound passengers, buses will depart Concord at 5:23am, 5:43am, and 6:03am and Pleasant Hill at 5:30am, 5:50am, and 6:10am to connect with these trains.

Saturday and Sunday Night:

  • The last southbound train departing Antioch at 11:42pm and Pittsburg/Bay Point at 12:10am will be cancelled.
  • Riders must take the earlier southbound train, which departs Antioch at 11:23pm and Pittsburg/Bay Point at 11:44pm.

Sunday Morning:

  • The first southbound trains departing Concord at 7:35am and 7:55am will be cancelled.
  • Instead, the first southbound trains going to San Francisco will depart Walnut Creek Station at 7:43am, 8:03am, and 8:23am.
  • Buses will depart Concord at 7:23am, 7:43am, and 8:03am and Pleasant Hill at 7:30am, 7:50am, and 8:10am to connect with these trains.

This upcoming work is part of BART’s overall effort to improve safety and reliability of the 131-mile, 50 station system. There are now more rebuilding projects happening across BART than at any point in its 50-year history. You can learn more about the progress of this work by reading the 2024 Measure RR Annual Report published by the independent Measure RR Bond Oversight Committee.

You can keep up with the latest updates for trackway repair projects that impact service by going to our Alerts and Advisories page.

Parking rate changes effective January 1, 2026

Starting January 1, 2026, BART parking rates will be changing to reflect inflation and demand-based adjustments, in line with BART’s Parking Pricing Policy.

  • Daily Fee Parking: Rates will increase by 40 cents at most stations for inflation. At high-demand stations (Glen Park, MacArthur, Rockridge, and Walnut Creek), rates will increase by 30% per policy.
  • Reserved Parking (Monthly and Single/Multi-day): Prices will increase at three high-demand stations (Millbrae, San Bruno, and Walnut Creek). Prices will decrease at nine lower-demand stations (Colma, Concord, El Cerrito del Norte, Dublin/Pleasanton, Fremont, Pittsburg/Bay Point, Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre, South San Francisco, and West Dublin/Pleasanton). Seven stations (Bay Fair, Coliseum, Hayward, North Concord/Martinez, Richmond, South Hayward, and Warm Springs/South Fremont) will have small increases due to inflation.

All transactions made on or after January 1, 2026, will reflect the new prices. Any reservations (Single/Multi-Day or Monthly Reserved) made before January 1, 2026, regardless of reservation dates, will reflect the price at time of purchase. Current monthly parking holders’ reservations will be renewed on January 15 for February and will be charged at the new prices.

BART’s current funding model heavily relies on fares and parking fees to run service and provide maintenance and police patrols in our parking areas. BART fares will also increase 6.2% on January 1, 2026, to keep pace with inflation so the agency is able to pay for continued operations and to work toward restoring financial stability.

Fares will increase 6.2 % on New Year’s Day based upon actual inflation in 2023 and 2024.

BART currently offers a 50% fare discount to qualifying low-income riders through the Clipper Start program. Visit Discounts | Bay Area Rapid Transit to learn more about additional fare discounts available. Parking discounts/commuter benefits may also be available through your employer.

Pay for parking on the official BART app, online or at machines inside stations with debit, credit or cash. Additional parking questions? Please visit BART’s Parking Overview Page or our FAQs.

Expect delays from single tracking between North Concord and Concord 1/13-1/14

Riders should expect delays of up to 20-minutes on the Antioch Line in the Antioch and SFO directions due to scheduled track maintenance between Concord and North Concord on Saturday 1/13/24 and Sunday 1/14/24.

Trains will share one track between Concord and North Concord in both directions while crews work on track infrastructure upgrades in this section.

These delays will also impact train departure times down the line because the trains will be arriving a few minutes later than usual. Check real time departures for your station to see what to expect.

Also, since you are here, heads up that on Monday, January 15, 2024, BART will run a Saturday schedule on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Saturday service means BART will open at 6am and close at midnight and there is less service on the Yellow line (service every 20 minutes).

January 15th will also be the first day of minor schedule changes. Some departure times have shifted by a few minutes and we encourage riders to check to see if their trip is impacted.

Installation work underway for Next Generation Fare Gates at Walnut Creek Station

The installation of Next Generation Fare Gates is scheduled to begin Friday, May 9 at Walnut Creek Station. The process is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.

During construction, there will be a barrier around the existing station gates.  Riders will use two temporary accessible gates to enter and exit Walnut Creek Station.  Both gates are located next to the Station Agent Booth. When facing the booth from the non-paid area of the station, the fare gate to your right is used to enter the station and the fare gate to your left is used to exit. Additionally, a carpet will be installed immediately before the entrance to each temporary gate to make the gates easier to locate for riders with visual impairments. The work will not delay train service, but riders may experience a few extra minutes wait to pass through the temporary fare gates during peak travel hours.

The latest work comes after BART has successfully installed Next Generation Fare Gates at 30 other stations across the system. All 50 BART stations will have new fare gates by the end of 2025. Learn more about the project here.
