Rebuilt escalator opens at Montgomery St., connecting platform to concourse

A second rebuilt escalator is open at Montgomery Street Station. The new escalator is more reliable, features bright LED lighting and is more energy efficient, with a “sleep mode” that saves electricity when no passengers are using it.  It connects the train platform to the station concourse level near the A5 entrance, which leads to Market, Montgomery and Post streets. Then construction will move to the third escalator next to the second new escalator and take it out of service for six months.

New escalator at Montgomery St. Station

An escalator that connects the concourse level to One Post Plaza near Post and Market streets was opened on March 18th at Montgomery after being rebuilt.

Meantime, rebuilding work continues on escalators Powell Street and Embarcadero stations.

It’s all part of BART’s ambitious project to rebuild 40 escalators and add one new unit at four downtown San Francisco stations.

BART is replacing the most troublesome escalators in its system in the downtown San Francisco stations in conjunction with a project to create canopies over the entrances, dramatically improving the traveler experience along the Market Street corridor.
