Safe Routes to BART

Safe Routes to BART (SR2B) is a grant program sponsored by BART using voter-approved Measure RR capital funds. SR2B is designed to help local agencies improve access for BART customers traveling to BART stations by walking and biking. Grants to local jurisdictions in Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco Counties using Measure RR capital funds will help our partner agencies deliver capital projects for the streets, sidewalks, trails and plazas that serve riders on their way to and from BART.

No further calls for projects are expected as Measure RR funds designated for this program have been awarded over three cycles. You can view projects that were awarded funds for each cycle.

Background

The Measure RR general obligation bond includes $135 million (4% of the $3.5 billion bond) to deliver capital projects to expand opportunities to safely access BART stations. $77 million of this amount has been tentatively allocated for the development and construction of active access (walking and bicycling) projects on or directly adjacent to BART station property.

BART set aside a total of $25 million of the $77 million for the SR2B grant program to provide funding for cities and counties to improve walking and biking on roadways and paths leading to and from BART. The most competitive projects for this grant were those that supported the goals of BART's Station Access Policy, expanded station access choices and made it safer and easier for all riders to use the system. SR2B provides grant funding for construction only (which may include construction management).

Program Goals

  • Project Readiness: Deliver near-term, enduring active access improvements to real property that demonstrate a clear nexus to a BART station.
  • Mode Shift: Expand opportunities to access BART stations with potential to shift people from driving and parking to walking and biking.
  • Partnership: Collaborate with local partners to create more sustainable communities.
  • Equitable: Provide equitable access for disadvantaged communities.
  • Customer Experience, Safety & Security: Enhance personal safety and security; add to passenger comfort and sense of place.
  • Complete Communities: Promote Transit-Oriented Development (TOD)
  • Leverage: Leverage other funding sources to deliver improvements.
