Status of Capital Project: Completed in 2021
Project elements
BART completed the El Cerrito del Norte Station Modernization project to reduce crowding, improve accessibility, deter fare evasion, and enhance customers’ experience.
Key improvements included:
- Expanded paid area with new fare gates and station agent booth
- New elevators and stairwells providing platform access
- New passenger restrooms
- “City of Homes” murals by Kyungmi Shin, as described in BART’s February 24, 2021 News Article
- Energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the station
- Systemwide ADA accessibility upgrades
To support sustainability, two bioswales were added in the parking areas to capture and filter stormwater runoff, helping protect local waterways from pollution.
Funding and partnerships
Funded by BART voter-approved Measure RR, State Proposition 1B, Contra Costa Measure J, and other sources, the project was closely coordinated with the City of El Cerrito’s Ohlone Greenway access, safety, and placemaking improvements.

Station Modernization Plan
In 2013, BART completed a Station Modernization Plan for both El Cerrito del Norte and El Cerrito Plaza BART stations, providing a long-term vision for improvements that could be phased in over time at each station as funding becomes available. The Plan addressed station functionality, safety, capacity, sustainability, appearance, and customer experience. El Cerrito del Norte was selected for implementation first due to the station's higher ridership and importance as a regional transportation hub.
