16th St. Mission BART Plaza Design Concepts

Update for April 27, 2026

BART is pleased to share an update on the BART 16th St. Plaza Design Concepts and to invite you to participate in the next phase of community engagement.

As we move into the community review phase, BART will host in‑person office hours to allow neighbors, community organizations, and local businesses to learn about the developing design concepts and share feedback directly with project staff. These open office hours are informal drop-in sessions. Attendees are welcome to stop by at any time during the scheduled window to view materials, ask questions, and share feedback.

These sessions will play an important role in ensuring that the design reflects the priorities, concerns, and ideas of the community members who use and experience the 16th Street Plaza every day. We aim to make these office hours accessible, informative, and welcoming to all stakeholders, providing space for open dialogue and deeper engagement with the project team.

  • Tuesday, May 5, 2 - 4 pm at Youth Arts Exchange Studios at La Fénix, 1950 Mission Street, San Francisco

The 16th St. Mission BART Plaza Design Concepts is a long-range assessment of possible infrastructure changes to the plaza to facilitate the design goals of safety, access, maintenance, and placekeeping. The scope of this effort is to develop opportunity concepts, engage internal and external stakeholders (city partners, community groups, neighboring businesses and residents, BART riders), and develop high-level cost estimates.

The project schedule in this current phase is about one year (July 2025 to June 2026). BART desires to support vibrant communities in and around the stations; however, with the agency’s current fiscal crisis, outside funding will be sought to complete the upgrades. To date, BART has received many comments on design, activation, and operations, and we will return to the community to solicit more input. The project deliverable will be a toolkit that reflects these comments and identify opportunities for implementation and stewardship involving BART, San Francisco, and community and business groups. This project will also be coordinated and integrated with work being undertaken by the City (such as SF Planning and SF OEWD) for the larger neighborhood.

Schedule/Process

  • Project kickoff (June 2025)
  • Engaged stakeholders and hosted first open house (July-November 2025)
  • Develop concepts (January-March 2026).
  • Re-engage stakeholders (April-May 2026). Open office hours near the plaza, attending and presenting at community group meetings, a community-led Spanish language meeting, and a second Open House.
  • Develop cost estimates and finalize project (May-June 2026).

Additional Next Steps

  • After this current project is completed, BART will work with stakeholders to seek funding to advance design and construction.
  • Significant community feedback has focused on ensuring that the identity of the neighborhood is integrated into the design and art. We have recorded this feedback and will ensure that there is ample space for community placemaking in the more detailed design after funding is secured. The design treatment and art will be co-created and co-led to secure funding, solicit artists, and implement.
